Abstract: This review examines Eric Friginal’s Corpus Linguistics for English Teachers and its contribution to teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It considers how the book introduces corpus linguistics, guides teachers in selecting online corpora, and translates authentic spoken and written language data into classroom activities. Particular attention is given to data driven learning, concordance searches, and the study of collocations as ways to help learners identify patterns of language use. The review finds that the book’s accessible explanations and guided exercises make corpus methods more practical for teachers and encourage learners to investigate language independently. It also notes that the book’s length and the varying availability of resources may limit its usefulness in some teaching settings. Overall, the book offers a useful bridge between corpus linguistics theory and classroom practice, while teachers will need to adapt its activities to their students’ needs and available resources.

Overview
Language education is undergoing rapid change in the modern era with a focus on using accurate and trustworthy real-world data from both spoken and written contexts to enhance the experiences of both teachers and students. The growth of corpus linguistics offers a contemporary method to support English as a second language acquisition. Eric Friginal addresses the significance and immediacy of pedagogical change in language education in his book Corpus Linguistics for English Teachers: New Tools Online Resources and Classroom Activities. It skilfully combines theoretical frameworks with practical application of Friginal’s work is an approachable manual for language teachers who are keen to understand the significance of corpus data in their teaching practices.
This book is crucial to the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) because it highlights how crucial it is to use authentic language usage to foster communicative competence. Friginal has concentrated on corpus a large structured database composed of diverse real-world data that gives educators the tools to better understand how language is used in practice. This reviews objective is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the books content highlighting its benefits and drawbacks as well as its pedagogical implications for TESOL approaches.
Content and Structure
The books three primary sections include an overview of web resources and their educational applications the foundations of corpus linguistics and a set of teaching exercises designed to expose students to real language data. The books sections on real-world applications in educational settings will assist readers in progressively deepening their comprehension of corpus linguistics.
Corpus Linguistics 101
An overview of corpus linguistics and its use in language instruction is the main focus of the first section. Friginal provided information on Data-driven learning (DDL) and the use of language as both structure and function in this overview. By integrating corpus linguistics into the broader context of applied linguistics Friginal provides TESOL teachers with an empirical basis to enhance their teaching strategies.
He describes the various types of corpora—general specialized and learner—and how language instruction can make use of them. Teachers must possess this basic knowledge in order to make informed decisions when integrating corpus data into their curricula. The importance of authentic corpora is also emphasized by Friginal who demonstrates how these resources not only enhance meaning but also reveal actual linguistic patterns that frequently defy what is taught in traditional literature. Biber et al. (1998) educational theories align with this emphasis on authenticity suggesting that an essential prerequisite for developing linguistic competence is exposure to real-world language usage.
Online Resource Seek
In the second part of the book educators grievances regarding the dearth of corpus resources are addressed with a helpful manual. The approach and available resources are described in this section along with the rationale for incorporating corpus resources. In order to help readers select the best resources for their educational environments Friginal provides in-depth evaluations of a variety of platforms and tools. Among the most prominent examples are the International Corpus of English (ICE) the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the British National Corpus (BNC). Friginals work goes beyond merely listing these resources by offering case studies that illustrate their effective use in educational contexts.
The author offers helpful exercises on the analysis of collocation patterns using concordance techniques to help with contextual language use. In keeping with Hunstons (2002) assertion that students must be exposed to language use in everyday situations this educational approach places a strong emphasis on teaching students pragmatics. According to Friginal acknowledging that not all educational circumstances have equal access to resources is a significant problem in contemporary academic life. Offering freely available and widely accessible resources is therefore essential to ensuring that corpus-based learning is inclusive for all students regardless of their backgrounds or educational environments. In the field of TESOL where educators frequently interact with disadvantaged pupils this commitment to inclusivity is particularly important.
Classroom Activities
Activities aimed at introducing students to corpus data is added to the conclusion part of the book under review. There are few guided tasks that encourage students to engage with real-world language examples added to the Friginal’s application. The experts in language education field like McCarthy & O’Keeffe (2010) have stated that these exercises are based on pragmatic language teaching approaches.
All the activities added in the Friginal’s framework focuses on enabling students comprehend linguistic patterns as they happen inquiring and learning, allowing. By encouraging students to consider collocations, the author offers exercises that help them get an understanding of how particular words come together in real-world language use. The application of these exercises will help students enhance their linguistic awareness while empowering them to take responsibility for their own education. In addition there are clear instructions assessment options that align with learning goals and guidance from instructors on how to use these exercises. A significant benefit of this book is its hands-on approach helping to reduce the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application and aids teachers in effectively utilising corpus linguistics.
