Abstract: This study examines the potential role of green hydrogen production in Sudan and identifies the technical, economic, and institutional conditions required for sustainable development. It adopts a descriptive analytical approach based on documentary review, international comparisons, and an illustrative calculation for a 1 MW electrolyser. No field survey or statistical hypothesis testing is undertaken. The documentary reference period extends through the end of 2024, supplemented by explanatory technical sources consulted during revision. The analysis indicates that solar and wind resources offer an initial opportunity but do not establish commercial viability without local resource measurements, renewable electricity, sustainable water supply, finance, and offtake agreements. Under assumed operation of 3,000 hours annually and electricity consumption of 55 kWh per kilogram, the illustrative plant produces approximately 54.5 tonnes of hydrogen annually. At an assumed electricity price of USD 0.05/kWh, electricity alone costs USD 2.75/kg, excluding other production and delivery costs. These calculations are illustrative rather than observed project results. The study concludes that Sudan should assess domestic industrial applications, particularly the ammonia and fertiliser value chain, and pursue a limited demonstration before expansion, while prioritising essential electricity needs. It recommends a site database, appropriate governance and safety arrangements, detailed feasibility studies, and water impact assessments before investment decisions.
