Abstract: This study examines the authority of solitary reports (Khabar al-Wāḥid) according to hadith scholars and legal theorists through a comparative analysis aimed at identifying areas of agreement and disagreement between their respective methodologies. The research problem arises from variations in defining solitary reports, determining the conditions for their acceptance, assessing whether they yield certain knowledge or predominant probability, and applying additional principles that may affect their evidentiary authority. The study seeks to clarify the concept and classification of Khabar al-Wāḥid, analyze the evidence supporting its authority, compare the conditions of acceptance adopted by hadith scholars and legal theorists, and examine the effects of corroborating indications, scholarly acceptance, widespread public relevance, analogy, general legal principles, and a narrator's practice contrary to his own report. The study employs an inductive, analytical, and comparative methodology, drawing primarily on classical hadith and legal-theoretical sources. It concludes that there is broad agreement among hadith scholars and legal theorists on the authority of an accepted solitary report and the obligation to act upon it. The main disagreements concern its epistemic value, the role of corroborating indications, and certain methodological conditions governing its application. The study further demonstrates that a considerable part of the disagreement is terminological or methodological rather than a fundamental dispute over the authority of the Prophetic Sunnah.
