highlight the importance of reading activity in literacy programs as a fundamental entry point for developing learners\u2019 educational and linguistic competencies. It also presents reading as an effective means of moving from the mere recognition of letters and symbols to comprehension, understanding, and interaction with written texts. The study begins by defining reading linguistically and terminologically, while explaining its complex nature as a mental, linguistic, psychological, visual, and social process based on decoding written symbols, linking them to meanings, and employing the reader\u2019s prior experiences in constructing understanding. The study also examines the elements of the reading act, namely the reader, the written text, and the reading process itself. It emphasizes that the quality of reading is closely connected to the reader\u2019s cognitive and linguistic characteristics, the nature of the text, and the educational objectives guiding the reading process. Furthermore, the study presents the most prominent reading strategies in literacy programs, such as global text comprehension, understanding vocabulary, sentences, and textual links, identifying main ideas, and summarizing them. It also discusses practices that enhance reading efficiency, including selecting an appropriate reading environment, setting reading goals, and developing linguistic repertoire. In addition, the study discusses methods of teaching reading in literacy programs, particularly the synthetic method, which begins with letters and sounds and progresses toward words and sentences, and the analytic method, which starts from meaningful complete texts and then moves toward analyzing their components.
