most prominent artistic trends in modern Arabic poetry during the twentieth century, with particular focus on Mahjar poetry and free verse as two of the most important poetic movements that contributed to renewing the structure of the Arabic poem and developing its intellectual and aesthetic dimensions. The study adopts the descriptive-analytical and historical approaches by tracing the emergence of these two trends, examining their cultural, social, and political contexts, analyzing their artistic and intellectual characteristics, and highlighting the similarities and differences between them. The study concludes that Mahjar poetry represented an important preliminary stage in the process of poetic renewal, as it expressed the experience of alienation, nostalgia, and the search for freedom and beauty. It was characterized by humanistic and romantic tendencies, linguistic simplicity, emotional sincerity, and an interest in nature and subjective experience. The study also shows that free verse marked a bolder transformation in the history of the Arabic poem through its liberation from the traditional two-hemistich structure and unified rhyme, its reliance on the poetic foot and internal rhythm, and its use of symbolism, myth, and complex poetic imagery to express the concerns of contemporary Arab humanity. The findings reveal that both trends contributed to moving Arabic poetry from the sphere of imitation to the realm of modernity and artistic experimentation, despite clear differences in musical structure, themes, and intellectual vision. Mahjar poetry remained closer to emotional contemplation and romantic inclination, while free verse was more deeply connected to political, social, and existential realities. The study further confirms that influence from Western culture did not lead to the loss of Arab identity; rather, it helped poets develop their artistic tools while preserving the spirit and cultural specificity of Arabic literature.
